The Story of My Amp - The Granville Sandra Jean Amplifier

When you work on classic tube amplifiers all the time like I do, you start to develop a “wish list” of things from each of the best ones that would allow something different to emerge.  You start to form a picture in your mind of what you would do if you could do it “your way”.  You acquire opinions on what caps, resistors, transformers and even wire you would use if you were building a classic style tube amplifier just for yourself.

That is just what I did.

The Sandra Jean (named, incidentally for my mom) came to me in a semi-completed state as little more than a chassis and turret board that I purchased from a fellow builder who bit off more than he wanted to chew.  I built the power section inspired by a particularly wonderful silver face Twin Reverb.  Right down to the style of lead dress to the filter capacitors.  I also configured the four power tube sockets to accept any octal tubes I wished to use.  Presently I am using a matched quartet of TAD 6L6WGC-STR tubes with great satisfaction.  But the amp can easily be reconfigured to accept 6V6, 5881, 6550, EL34 or any of the KT family of power tubes.  All that is required is a simple adjustment of the idle current.

The two preamp channels are tweaked to provide some crunch (Normal) and some Fender-style clean glassiness (Tremolo).  Also present on the Tremolo channel are a tube driven reverb circuit and tremolo circuit.  JJ preamp tubes are used throughout.

Three different speaker outputs allow loads of 4, 8 or 16 ohms to be utilized.

I run the amp (at very respectable volumes) in to my old faithful Randall 2x12 cabinet loaded with Mojotone BV 60 watt speakers.

I am, to say the least very pleased with my amp.  I heartily recommend the experience to anyone interested in truly finding their own sound.
